About OpenSourceProjects.cc
What is OpenSourceProjects.cc?
OpenSourceProjects.cc is a curated discovery platform for open source software. We help developers, engineering teams, and technical decision-makers find high-quality open source alternatives to proprietary tools — organized by category, use case, and the commercial software they can replace.
Why We Built This
GitHub hosts millions of repositories, but discovering the right project for your needs is still surprisingly hard. Search results are noisy, trending lists are ephemeral, and “awesome” lists lack context beyond a one-line description.
We built OpenSourceProjects.cc to bridge that gap — a structured, searchable catalog where every project has a dedicated page with GitHub metrics, AI-generated summaries, live screenshots, and clear categorization. Whether you're looking for a self-hosted Slack alternative or the most active open source CRM, you can find it here in seconds.
How It Works
- Data from GitHub: We pull project metadata directly from the GitHub API — stars, forks, license, language, last commit date, and more. Data is refreshed regularly to stay current.
- AI-Generated Summaries: Each project page includes a structured introduction generated by AI based on the project's README and metadata, covering what it does, key features, and common use cases.
- Automated Screenshots: We capture live screenshots of project websites and dashboards so you can see what the software looks like before clicking through.
- Categorization: Projects are organized by functional category (e.g. databases, DevOps, design tools) and mapped to the commercial software they serve as alternatives to.
Project Ranking
Projects are ranked based on a combination of GitHub signals: star count, fork count, recent commit activity, and community engagement. We favor actively maintained projects with clear documentation and permissive licenses. The ranking algorithm is designed to surface genuinely useful software, not just repositories with inflated star counts.
Affiliate Disclosure
Some project pages include affiliate links to managed hosting providers (such as Elestio) that offer one-click deployment for self-hosted software. If you choose to deploy through these links, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. This helps us keep the platform free and independent. Affiliate relationships never influence project rankings or editorial content.
Submit a Project
Are you an open source maintainer? We welcome project submissions. If your project is on GitHub and has an active community, we'd love to feature it. Project submission will be available soon.
